If you want to save on fuel but jumping into the world of fully electric vehicles isn't an option — whether due to price or personal preference — a hybrid is an excellent alternative. But what should you keep in mind when making the switch to a partially electric vehicle? Different hybrids suit very different driving needs, so it's worth starting with your own daily routine. What kind of hybrid suits your needs?

There are several different hybrid systems available. These days, "hybrid" typically refers to a plug-in hybrid — a car whose battery you can charge yourself using a charging station or a regular outlet. The common identifier for a plug-in hybrid is PHEV, though manufacturers have their own model-specific designations.
When buying a car, it's worth thinking about whether you'll actually charge it in your situation. Some housing associations prohibit charging vehicles, and using a standard outdoor outlet isn't a great long-term solution. Battery condition may also be a concern, as news stories about high replacement costs have been a recurring topic. In most cases, the manufacturer's battery warranty is quite long, and battery issues during the car's lifespan are generally rare. Plug-in hybrid

The most common plug-in hybrids can travel roughly 20–50 kilometers on electricity alone, meaning most people's commutes and errands can be handled quietly and typically at low running costs. Mercedes' latest C-Class hybrids can already travel up to 100 kilometers on a single charge, so even longer trips can be completed with minimal fuel consumption. When driving with a depleted battery, fuel consumption rises slightly above that of a comparable combustion-only vehicle, since the battery adds extra weight. A plug-in hybrid isn't worth buying if you don't plan to charge it at all.
Charging typically happens at home, since most plug-in hybrids charge slowly enough that stopping to charge while running errands isn't practical. A standard home outlet delivers 3.6 kW of power, so the battery of the Volkswagen Passat GTE — one of our best-selling plug-in hybrids — charges from empty to full in about 2–4 hours depending on the model year. Regardless of the car, the battery will always have time to fully charge overnight.

Self-charging hybrid, or full hybrid

A self-charging hybrid is a hassle-free option since it doesn't need to be plugged in. A full hybrid, or self-charging hybrid, recovers braking energy and can also use the combustion engine to charge the battery. The hybrid system automatically manages the battery's state of charge.
Some full hybrids have an EV Mode that allows the car to run briefly on electricity alone when the battery level and driving conditions permit. The battery in a full hybrid is smaller than in a plug-in hybrid, so electric driving typically occurs in short bursts. Examples of full hybrid models include Toyota's Corolla and RAV4. The RAV4 is also available as a plug-in hybrid.

Mild hybrid

A mild hybrid also falls into the self-charging category, with one key difference. It cannot run on electricity alone — instead, it recovers braking energy and uses it to assist with starting from a stop and coasting to a red light.
It does save fuel, but the difference compared to a conventional combustion engine is smaller than with other hybrid options. Mild hybrid systems have become increasingly common in modern combustion engines as a way to reduce emissions and fuel consumption across the board. Mild hybrids are identified by the MHEV designation.
The advantage of self-charging hybrids and mild hybrids is convenience — you don't have to worry about charging. In addition, the car's average fuel consumption stays low since there's always a bit of charge in the battery for acceleration and city driving. Maintenance costs may be slightly higher than for a traditional combustion vehicle, but there shouldn't be any major surprises. Hybrids may also come with a manufacturer's battery warranty. When buying a hybrid or mild hybrid, checking the car's condition doesn't differ much from inspecting a combustion vehicle.

What should you check on a hybrid car before the test drive?

Even before the test drive, it's worth reviewing the car's basic specs, service history, and hybrid system. With used hybrids, the model name alone doesn't always tell you what technology is under the hood — within the same model line, different years may offer mild hybrid, full hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions.
With a plug-in hybrid, the model year can matter more than usual, since battery size, electric range, and charging capabilities have evolved rapidly. A newer version of the same model can therefore differ significantly from an older one in terms of real-world performance.

Service history and hybrid system details

The service history shows whether the car has been maintained according to the manufacturer's service schedule. It's also worth checking for any warning lights on the dashboard and confirming which hybrid system is in the specific vehicle.

For a plug-in hybrid, it's worth checking the battery capacity, the stated electric range, and the car's charging capabilities. Also find out what type of charging connector the car has and what charging cables are included.
There can be significant differences between plug-in hybrids in terms of how far you can go on electricity and how quickly the battery can be charged. These differences matter a great deal in practice, especially if you plan to drive most of your daily trips on electricity.

What should you test during a hybrid car test drive?

During a hybrid car test drive, in addition to the car's general drivability, focus on how the hybrid system performs in real-world conditions. Allow enough time for the test drive and, if possible, drive in a variety of environments — such as in the city and on the highway.
For a plug-in hybrid, the test drive is most useful when the battery has sufficient charge. This way, you can experience electric driving rather than only how the car performs on the combustion engine.

Try out the interaction between the electric motor and combustion engine

In both full hybrids and plug-in hybrids, the electric motor and combustion engine work together under the car's system control. During the test drive, pay attention to whether the car runs smoothly and whether there are any unusual noises, warnings, or jerking when switching between power sources.
With a plug-in hybrid, try driving on electricity alone if possible. This will give you a feel for what the car is like in everyday electric driving mode.

Explore driving modes and regenerative braking

Hybrid cars may offer different driving settings — for example, for electric-focused driving, economical driving, or higher performance. The implementation varies by model, so during the test drive, try at least the modes you'd actually use in daily life.
Regenerative braking also affects the driving feel. In some cars, you can adjust its intensity, while in others the system operates mostly automatically. The most important thing is that the car's behavior feels natural to you.

Is the plug-in hybrid's electric range enough for your driving?

It's worth comparing a plug-in hybrid's electric range directly to your own daily driving distances. If your typical commutes, errands, and recreational trips fall within the car's electric range, a large portion of your everyday driving can be done without using the combustion engine.
Electric range varies significantly by model and model year. In older used plug-in hybrids, it may be just a few dozen kilometers, while newer models may have a WLTP range exceeding 100 kilometers. Real-world range is also affected by factors such as temperature, driving speed, and the use of heating or air conditioning.

Where do you plan to charge your plug-in hybrid?

A plug-in hybrid is generally the right choice when you're able to charge its battery regularly. The easiest solution is often charging at home overnight, but regular charging may also be possible at your workplace, for example.
If you don't have access to your own charging and charging would be infrequent, it's worth considering whether you'd actually get enough benefit from the plug-in hybrid's larger battery. In that case, a standard full hybrid may be a more convenient option.

What should you know about the battery in a used hybrid car?

A hybrid car's drive battery is designed for long-term use, but battery characteristics and warranty coverage vary by manufacturer, model, and model year. When buying a used car, it's worth finding out whether the drive battery still has manufacturer warranty coverage and what the warranty terms are for that specific vehicle.
In a plug-in hybrid, the battery's condition also affects how far the car can actually travel on electricity. However, the car's mileage alone doesn't tell you the battery's condition, so it's worth asking the seller about any available battery health inspection (or state of health, SOH) data or other relevant information.

Also check the cargo space, towing capacity, and other practical features

Hybrid technology shouldn't distract you from the car's everyday usability. During the test drive, check whether the cargo space, cabin room, and driving position suit your needs.
If you plan to tow a trailer or camper, always verify the specific car's maximum towing capacity. Towing capacities for hybrid models may differ from other powertrain versions within the same model line. Cargo space may also differ in some models compared to the equivalent combustion version, due to the placement of the battery and other hybrid components.

How long does a self-charging hybrid battery last?

The traction battery in a self-charging hybrid is designed to last a long time, often for much of the vehicle’s service life. However, battery condition is affected by mileage, temperature, operating conditions and the age of the car. A full hybrid battery usually operates within a relatively narrow state-of-charge range, which helps reduce stress on the battery compared with repeatedly charging it from empty to full. When buying a used hybrid, check the service history, any hybrid-system warning messages and whether the battery condition has been assessed during servicing.

What should you ask the seller about a hybrid car?

If anything about the car's features is unclear, make sure to ask before making a purchase decision — at minimum about the hybrid technology, service history, and for plug-in hybrids, charging. Good questions to ask include:
  • What hybrid technology does this car have?
  • Has the car been serviced according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule?
  • Does the drive battery still have manufacturer warranty coverage?
  • What is the plug-in hybrid's stated electric range?
  • What charging cables are included with the car?
  • What is the car's maximum towing capacity?
