Ford Ranger

Overview

Ford Ranger in Brief

The Ford Ranger is a four-wheel-drive pickup truck that combines the hauling capability of a work vehicle with the comfort and safety features of a passenger car. The used car inventory in Finland leans toward diesel engines, automatic transmissions, and Super Cab or Double Cab configurations. The latest generation also includes the gasoline-powered Ranger Raptor and the plug-in Ranger PHEV.
The Ranger is well suited for towing heavy trailers, work sites, agriculture, and hobbies that require an open cargo bed or off-road capability. It's worth knowing your intended use, cab type, required payload, and the registered towing capacity before deciding which specific vehicle to purchase.

Who Is the Ford Ranger For?

The Ranger is a justified choice when a standard SUV or van doesn't offer a sufficient combination of towing capacity, ground clearance, four-wheel drive, and an easy-to-clean cargo bed. This model is especially popular in the following contexts:
  • On job sites and in agriculture: the bed carries tools, equipment, and dirty loads separately from the cabin.
  • Towing a boat, horse trailer, or heavy trailer: many versions have a maximum braked trailer weight of 3,500 kg, but this figure should always be verified from the vehicle's registration documents.
  • Hunting and outdoor activities: four-wheel drive, a low-range transfer case, and ground clearance help on rough terrain. Tires and driver judgment still determine the limits of traction.
  • Transporting a crew and gear: the Double Cab offers a second row of seats, while the Super Cab leaves more length for the bed.
  • Long-distance driving: a well-equipped Wildtrak or Platinum can provide a comfortable ride on longer trips, thanks to adaptive cruise control, a camera system, and passenger car–like driving comfort.

Used Ford Ranger Pricing

The price of a Ranger is influenced primarily by model year, mileage, cab type, engine, trim level, and the vehicle's previous use. A bed cover, tow hitch, auxiliary heater, and VAT deductibility are also typically important factors for buyers. The Raptor is a higher-performance special model, so it shouldn't be compared directly to a base-model Ranger on price alone.
At the time of review in September 2026, Saka's inventory included, for example:
  • a 2015 Super Cab 2.2 TDCi automatic with 172,000 kilometers driven, priced at €20,900
  • a 2020 Double Cab 2.0 TDCi Thunder with 124,000 kilometers driven, priced at €36,790
  • and a 2025 Double Cab Wildtrak PHEV with 25,000 kilometers driven, priced at €60,900.
Prices are individual listing examples. Current vehicles for sale and their prices are shown in the listings on this page.

Model Years and Facelifts

The most relevant model history for used Rangers available in Finland begins with the T6 generation, which went on sale in Europe in 2012. Within the same generation, engines, transmissions, and features changed multiple times.
  • From 2012, T6: available with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder TDCi diesel and a 3.2-liter five-cylinder TDCi diesel. In Finland, both manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are commonly found, particularly in Super Cab and Double Cab body styles.
  • 2016 facelift: the exterior and interior were updated, driver assistance features were added, and the engine lineup was revised. The 2.2 TDCi and 3.2 TDCi are still seen in used car listings.
  • 2019 facelift: the 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel became the primary option. The more powerful Bi-Turbo version was paired with a ten-speed automatic. The Ranger Raptor joined the European lineup with the 2.0 EcoBlue Bi-Turbo diesel.
  • From 2023, new generation: the body, cabin, and technology were all redesigned. The lineup added a 3.0 V6 EcoBlue diesel alongside the 2.0 EcoBlue diesels, as well as the Ranger Raptor's 3.0 V6 EcoBoost gasoline engine. The engine distribution among used cars in Finland depends on which versions were originally imported new.
  • From 2025, Ranger PHEV: the plug-in hybrid combines a 2.3-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine, an electric motor, four-wheel drive, and a ten-speed automatic. Saka's listings indicate an electric-only range of 41 km.

Technical Specifications

Engines and Powertrains

  • 2.2 TDCi: A four-cylinder diesel common in vehicles from the 2010s.
  • 3.2 TDCi: A five-cylinder diesel known for its larger displacement and strong low-end torque.
  • 2.0 EcoBlue: The primary diesel engine since the 2019 refresh. Single-turbo and twin-turbo Bi-Turbo versions differ from each other. High-output versions often come with a ten-speed automatic.
  • 3.0 V6 EcoBlue: The next-generation six-cylinder diesel delivers 600 Nm of torque and is well suited for demanding towing and long-distance use.
  • 3.0 V6 EcoBoost Raptor: A gasoline-powered, higher-performance model. European versions with 292 horsepower can also be found in Saka's inventory. The Raptor's suspension and intended use differ from the standard Ranger, which is focused on cargo hauling.
  • 2.3 EcoBoost PHEV: A plug-in hybrid that enables short trips on electric power when charged regularly.

Manual and Automatic Transmissions

Older Ford Rangers come with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The manual is common especially in more affordable work trucks, while the automatic makes driving easier in traffic, off-road, and when towing a trailer.
The ten-speed automatic was introduced with the 2019 model refresh. It is found in the most powerful two-liter diesel variants as well as the next-generation six-cylinders, the Raptor, and the plug-in hybrid. When buying a used vehicle, it is worth checking the transmission's operation and service history during a test drive.

Four-Wheel Drive and Off-Road Capabilities

Most Rangers sold in the Finnish market feature a selectable four-wheel drive system with a low-range transfer case. In standard 2H mode, the vehicle is rear-wheel drive. 4H engages four-wheel drive for slippery or loose surfaces, and 4L provides a reduced gear ratio for slow, demanding progress. The 4H or 4L modes of the older part-time four-wheel drive system are not intended for use on dry, paved roads.
The next-generation e-4WD system may include a 4A automatic mode that distributes power based on conditions and is also suitable for varying road surfaces. A locking differential, drive modes, hill start assist, and hill descent control improve handling.
The Raptor is focused on higher-speed off-road driving and suspension management. It is not automatically the best choice for maximum payload or towing the heaviest trailer. A standard Ranger may be the more practical choice for work use based on payload capacity, towing capacity, and price.

Cab Configurations and Bed

The Ranger's cab type directly affects passenger capacity and bed usability:
  • Single Cab: A single-row cab with the longest bed. Less common as a used vehicle in Finland, but well suited for work focused on cargo.
  • Super Cab: Small rear doors and a rear seat better suited for occasional use. The bed is longer than on the Double Cab, making this a useful compromise for tools and primary use by two people.
  • Double Cab: Four full-size doors and a significantly more usable second row of seats. A cabin suitable for five passengers comes with a shorter bed.
A tonneau cover, roll cover, or hard top protects cargo from the elements but takes up space and adds weight to the vehicle. On a used Ranger, it is worth checking the operation of the mechanisms and locks, the condition of the seals, and the drainage. Also verify that the cover or top is securely attached and that there is no damage around the mounting points.

Dimensions, Payload, and Towing Capacity

The dimensions below describe the base next-generation Double Cab model. The Raptor, PHEV, bed accessories, and different tire sizes may affect height, weights, bed dimensions, and payload capacity.

The Ranger's payload capacity is determined by the individual vehicle's curb weight and its gross vehicle weight rating. Accessories, a bed cover, towing equipment, passengers, and items carried in the vehicle all reduce the remaining payload. Check the payload capacity of the specific vehicle on its registration certificate, not the highest figure cited for the model range.
The maximum permissible trailer weight for many Ranger variants is 3,500 kg for a braked trailer. This refers to the trailer's actual permissible gross weight including its load. On the Raptor and some other variants, the towing capacity may be lower. The combined weight of the vehicle and trailer, tongue weight, driver's license class, and the vehicle's load may also limit towing.

Driving Experience and Top Features

On-Road Feel and Under Load

The Ranger's elevated driving position and large mirrors help with situational awareness, but the length of over five meters is noticeable when parking and navigating tight intersections. With an empty open bed, the rear axle can respond to road imperfections more noticeably than a passenger car.
A load changes the driving feel and behavior. The vehicle's suspension should not be evaluated solely on an unloaded test drive if the vehicle is otherwise used continuously under load.
Aggressive off-road tires can increase noise, fuel consumption, and steering imprecision on paved roads. Tire type should be chosen based on actual use. A backup camera, 360-degree camera system, and parking sensors are practical features on a vehicle of this size—not merely a comfort option.

Top Features

  • Fuel-operated auxiliary heater or PHEV scheduled pre-heating
  • Heated windshield, seats, and steering wheel
  • Backup camera or 360-degree camera system
  • Adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring
  • Trailer hitch and trailer handling assist systems
  • Lockable, weather-protecting bed cover or hard top
  • Bed liner, tie-down points, and work lights
  • Locking differential and drive modes suited to the intended use
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity on newer vehicles
  • PHEV Pro Power Onboard power outlet for tools and other electrical devices
XL and XLT are work-oriented trim levels for the Ranger. Limited, Wildtrak, and Platinum models generally offer more comfort, styling, and driving-enhancing features. The Raptor is a special model designed for high-performance off-road driving. However, the features of an individual vehicle should always be verified in the listing, as equipment varies by model year and market.

Buyer's Guide

Maintenance and Running Costs

The Ranger's cost of ownership is generally higher than that of a typical passenger car. Its substantial weight, four-wheel drive, commercial-grade tire sizes, and heavy use all contribute to increased wear on tires, brakes, and the suspension. For diesel models, total costs include not only fuel but also motor vehicle tax and maintenance of the engine and emissions systems. It's worth calculating insurance costs for the specific trim level you're considering.
Towing, frequent short cold starts, and off-road driving can make the demanding-use conditions of the maintenance schedule particularly relevant. Use the license plate number or VIN to check the current maintenance items and intervals for the engine oil, timing system, automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive system.
The PHEV can reduce gasoline consumption if your typical daily driving falls within the electric range and the vehicle is charged regularly. Without frequent charging, a large and heavy vehicle will run primarily on gasoline. The cost of home charging, fuel consumption on longer trips, insurance, and purchase price should therefore all be factored into the same comparison.

What Should You Check When Buying a Used Ford Ranger?

Checklist

  • Service history: verify scheduled maintenance, completed repairs, and any upcoming service work due. Confirm the correct maintenance schedule for the specific engine and transmission version based on the vehicle's identification details.
  • Suspension and undercarriage: look for dents, bent skid plates, rust, and signs of heavy off-road use. A lift inspection helps assess the frame, suspension, drivetrain, and any potential leaks.
  • Bed and tow hitch: check the bed floor, side panels, tie-down points, bed cover, and the condition and functionality of the tow hitch and electrical connector.
  • Four-wheel drive: following the owner's manual, test all four-wheel drive modes, the low-range transfer case, and any differential lock on a suitable surface. No system fault warnings should remain on the instrument cluster.
  • Transmission and clutch: gears should engage consistently both cold and warm. On a manual, assess clutch feel and operation; on an automatic, evaluate smooth take-off and shift quality.
  • Tires: check size, load rating, wear, and that tires on the same axle are matched. Uneven wear may also indicate alignment issues or suspension wear.
  • Modifications and accessories: verify that lift kits, winches, lights, tire changes, and bed structures have been properly installed. Confirm whether a modified vehicle inspection was required and completed.
  • PHEV: check the charging cables, charge port and charging functionality, electric range, and the warranty terms and service history of the high-voltage battery.

Super Cab or Double Cab?

  • Choose the Super Cab if bed length and hauling tools are more important than regular rear seat use. Try the rear seats and check how the doors open before making your decision.
  • Choose the Double Cab if you regularly carry multiple passengers or use the truck for family and leisure driving as well. The trade-off is a shorter bed.

2.2, 3.2, or 2.0 Diesel?

  • 2.2 TDCi offers a wide selection of older, more affordable options. Choose based on condition and documented history.
  • 3.2 TDCi suits a buyer who values the strong pulling power of the five-cylinder engine and accepts higher fuel consumption.
  • 2.0 EcoBlue is the newer option, where the capable Bi-Turbo engine and ten-speed automatic can make towing and highway driving effortless. Verify the exact power output and drivetrain configuration.
  • 3.0 V6 EcoBlue is worth considering when you want the most powerful diesel option in the new generation and frequently drive with a load or tow a trailer.

Diesel, Raptor, or PHEV?

The standard diesel Ranger is the most natural all-around choice for long distances, heavy towing, and use where charging isn't an option. The Raptor makes sense if performance, its specialized suspension, and off-road capability matter more than payload capacity and purchase price. The PHEV is best suited for a buyer who can charge at home or at work, covers most daily driving on shorter trips, but still needs an open bed and strong towing capability.

Competitors and Comparison

Ford's Own Alternatives

  • Ford Transit Custom: choose a closed panel van if cargo protection, low loading height, and cargo space volume are more important than the off-road capabilities of a flatbed.
  • Ford Transit: a larger option when transporting high volumes of goods and an enclosed cargo area or special body serves better than an open bed.
  • Ford Ranger Raptor: an in-family alternative to the standard Ranger for buyers who prioritize performance and a specialized chassis. For work use, check the Raptor's payload and towing capacity with extra care.

Comparison With Other Pickup Trucks

  • Toyota Hilux: the Ranger's primary competitor for work, towing, and off-road use. Compare cab type, automatic transmission, payload, and equipment levels among vehicles of the same age.
  • Volkswagen Amarok: emphasizes a spacious cab and powerful engines. The latest Amarok shares its technical platform with the new Ranger, but trim levels, styling, and model-specific tuning differ.
  • Isuzu D-Max: a work-focused alternative worth comparing especially on the basis of price, payload, towing capacity, and equipment.
  • Mitsubishi L200: a more compact point of comparison, whose four-wheel-drive solutions and used car prices may suit a different budget.
  • Nissan Navara: a strong used option if a Double Cab, towing capability, and a more car-like rear suspension are appealing. Production of this model for the European market has ended, so availability leans toward slightly older vehicles.

Summary

The Ranger stands out with a wide range of engine and trim options, spanning from the work-focused Super Cab to the luxurious Wildtrak, the performance-oriented Raptor, and a plug-in hybrid. The Hilux and D-Max are strong work truck counterparts, the Amarok leans toward comfort, and the L200 may be a better fit in terms of size or price.
The best used pickup truck is found by comparing vehicles with the same cab type and intended use. Rather than raw power figures alone, the deciding factors also include service history, the condition of the body and frame, vehicle-specific payload, towing capacity, and how well the bed dimensions match your hauling needs.

Ford Ranger – Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ford Ranger a commercial vehicle or a passenger car? The Ranger can be registered as, for example, an N1-class light commercial vehicle, but the classification is always verified from the individual vehicle's registration records. The registration affects, among other things, taxation, speed limits, and how the vehicle may be used.
How much can the Ford Ranger tow? The maximum permitted braked trailer mass for many Ranger variants is 3,500 kg. Not all variants share the same figure — some Raptors, for example, differ. Always check the vehicle's towing capacity and maximum permitted combination weight on the registration certificate (and ensure your driver's license covers it).
What is the difference between the Super Cab and the Double Cab? The Super Cab has a smaller rear seat and a longer bed, while the Double Cab has four full-size doors and a more practical second row of seats. The Double Cab is better suited for regular passenger transport, while the Super Cab is geared toward load-focused use.
Is the Ford Ranger always four-wheel drive? Not globally, but the used Ranger inventory available in Finland is heavily weighted toward four-wheel-drive vehicles. The four-wheel-drive system and available drive modes vary depending on the model year and trim level.
Can you drive the Ranger's four-wheel drive on asphalt? The 4H and 4L modes of older part-time four-wheel-drive systems should not be used on dry, high-traction asphalt. The optional 4A automatic mode available on newer e-4WD systems is designed for varying road conditions. Always follow the owner's manual for the specific vehicle.
What is the Ford Ranger Raptor? The Raptor is a high-performance special edition of the Ranger, featuring a more advanced suspension than the standard Ranger, off-road-specific drive modes, and its own engine lineup. It is best chosen for its capabilities, not for maximum payload capacity.
Is there a plug-in hybrid version of the Ford Ranger? Yes. The Ranger PHEV combines a 2.3-liter gasoline engine, an electric motor, a rechargeable battery, and four-wheel drive. Listings for 2025 model year vehicles on Saka indicate an electric range of 41 miles.
What should you check before buying a Ford Ranger? Check the service history, suspension and undercarriage, bed condition, tow hitch, tires, four-wheel-drive mode functionality, and whether any modifications have been properly documented. Also assess whether the vehicle's specific payload capacity and towing capacity match your intended use.
