Mitsubishi Outlander

Popular and spacious SUV with multiple powertrain options

Overview

Mitsubishi Outlander in Brief

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a mid-size SUV that combines a high driving position, family car space, and all-wheel drive in many versions. Outlander does not automatically mean a plug-in hybrid — in Finland, used gasoline and diesel models are available alongside Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrids. Saka carries both Outlander and Outlander PHEV models in its inventory.
For buyers considering gasoline or diesel versions, seven seats may be an appealing feature — something the third-generation PHEV does not offer. The PHEV, which arrived in Europe in 2013, combines an externally chargeable battery with electric all-wheel drive. The differences between powertrains therefore affect not only charging but also seating capacity, drivetrain configuration, and the vehicle's suitability for different types of trips.
You can compare all the cars shown on this page regardless of whether the listing specifies gasoline, diesel, or plug-in hybrid as the powertrain.
For information focused exclusively on the plug-in hybrid version and a separate inventory, visit the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV page. You can also browse all of Saka's used Mitsubishi vehicles.

Who Is the Mitsubishi Outlander For?

The Outlander is a great fit for anyone looking for a spacious and practical SUV. The right powertrain depends primarily on daily driving distances, access to charging, and seating needs.
  • For those comparing powertrains: The Outlander offers options that require no charging as well as a PHEV that can be charged from an external power source.
  • For family use: The third generation's wide cabin and versatile cargo area are well suited for transporting children, sports equipment, and luggage.
  • For those who need seven seats: Suitable options can be found among certain gasoline and diesel versions. The third-generation PHEV seats five.
  • For towing: Many PHEV versions have a braked towing capacity of 1,500 kilograms. In combustion engine versions, towing capacity varies depending on the engine and drivetrain.
  • For winter driving and cottage roads: All-wheel drive helps with getting moving and maintaining traction, but ground clearance, tires, and road conditions still ultimately determine how well the vehicle handles.

Used Mitsubishi Outlander Price

At the time of review in September 2026, Saka had seven Outlanders for sale, with listed prices ranging from €8,900 to €19,900. The most affordable in the selection was a 2013 seven-seat diesel model with 273,000 kilometers on the odometer. A 2019 2.4-liter PHEV was priced at €16,400, and a 2018 gasoline-powered front-wheel-drive model at €19,900.
Prices and inventory change continuously, so check the car listings on this page for the most up-to-date information on available Outlanders.

Model Years and Generations

Distinguishing between Outlander generations is important, as the vehicle's structure, powertrains, and interior layout have changed significantly over time.
  • First generation, 2001–2006: The early version of the model was more compact and more rugged in character than its successors. Very few of these vehicles are available as used cars in Finland.
  • Second generation, 2006–2012: The body grew larger, and five- and seven-seat versions became available. Used examples are primarily gasoline and diesel models.
  • Third generation, 2012–2021: The most important and popular generation in the Finnish used car market. The lineup included gasoline and diesel versions as well as the five-seat PHEV, which arrived in Europe in 2013. Styling, features, and powertrains were updated multiple times during production.
  • Fourth generation, from 2021: The model was first introduced in other markets. The new-generation Outlander PHEV went on sale in Finland for the 2025 model year, featuring a larger battery and a new body. It remains significantly rarer than the third generation in the used car market.

Technical Specifications

Gasoline and Diesel Engines

The third-generation Outlanders sold in Finland have featured primarily 2.0-liter MIVEC gasoline engines and 2.2-liter DI-D diesel engines. The gasoline model is available with a manual transmission as well as a continuously variable CVT automatic. The diesel has been sold with both manual and automatic transmissions. The exact combination also affects the drivetrain, seating capacity, and maximum towing capacity.
The gasoline version is well suited for varied driving without the need for charging, while the diesel is most at home on long trips and higher mileage use. Not all standard Outlander models are all-wheel drive or seven-seaters. Among used vehicles, you'll find, for example, a front-wheel-drive five-seat 2.0 MIVEC as well as all-wheel-drive seven-seat gasoline or diesel versions.

Outlander PHEV Plug-In Hybrid

The Outlander PHEV is always a plug-in hybrid and all-wheel drive. The version sold through 2018 features a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, approximately 12 kWh drive battery, and an electric motor on each axle. For the 2019 model year, the powertrain was updated with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine and approximately 13.8 kWh battery.
The actual electric range of a used vehicle depends on battery condition, temperature, speed, and heater usage. The new-generation PHEV sold in Finland still uses a 2.4-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors, but its technical specifications should not be applied to older vehicles. A detailed comparison of PHEV versions can be found on the separate Outlander PHEV page.

Front-Wheel Drive, Mechanical All-Wheel Drive, and Electric All-Wheel Drive

Standard Outlanders are available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The combustion engine version uses a mechanical drivetrain for all-wheel drive, while the PHEV achieves all-wheel drive through electric motors on the front and rear axles. The practical significance of the drivetrain is reflected not only in traction but also in fuel consumption, weight, price, and, in some versions, towing capacity.
The PHEV does not have a conventional multi-speed automatic transmission. The electric motors propel the vehicle, the gasoline engine can generate electricity through a generator, and at appropriate highway speeds it can transmit power to the front axle. Mitsubishi's S-AWC vehicle dynamics system coordinates power distribution between the electric motors, braking, and stability control. The PHEV drivetrain is therefore not equivalent to a mechanically all-wheel-driven gasoline or diesel Outlander.

PHEV Charging and Electric Range

The third-generation Outlander PHEV can be charged on AC power, and many vehicles sold in Finland also include a CHAdeMO DC fast-charging port. In older European vehicles, the AC charging port is typically Type 1, while the new generation sold in Finland uses a Type 2 connector. Buyers should verify the cables included with the vehicle and their compatibility with their own charging point.
The originally stated electric range of the older 2.0-liter PHEV was based on the NEDC measurement method, while later vehicles report figures using the WLTP measurement standard. The figures therefore cannot be compared directly. In a used vehicle, the actual range may fall significantly short of the original stated figure, especially in cold weather, at highway speeds, or when heating the cabin.

Dimensions, Cargo Space, and Towing Capacity

The third-generation Outlander is nearly 4.7 meters long. The combustion engine model has a larger cargo area than the PHEV version, and in the seven-seat model, the third row reduces cargo space to 128 liters when all seats are in use. The figures in the table reflect European versions of the third generation. Model year and trim level may cause minor differences.

The method used to measure cargo space and production-phase changes to the PHEV affect the stated maximum volumes. The towing capacity of gasoline and diesel versions also varies depending on the engine, transmission, and drivetrain. Towing capacity refers to the combined weight of the trailer and its load. The final permitted value should always be verified from the vehicle's registration documents.

Driving Experience and Top Features

Driving Feel and Driver Assistance Systems

The Outlander emphasizes easy handling and relaxed long-distance travel. The PHEV pulls away smoothly on electric motors and is quiet at city speeds when the drive battery has charge. During hard acceleration or as the battery charge level drops, the sound of the gasoline engine becomes more noticeable. The steering is light, and the body feels larger than a compact passenger car, especially in tight parking spaces.
Depending on trim level and model year, the vehicle may be equipped with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and automatic braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. These are driver assistance features, not autonomous driving systems.

Top Features

The equipment level varies by model year, version, and market. Noteworthy features to look for in used Outlanders include:
  • 360-degree camera system: makes it easier to park and assess surroundings in a vehicle that is nearly 4.7 meters long.
  • Adaptive cruise control: adjusts speed to match traffic ahead and makes longer trips more comfortable.
  • Heated steering wheel and windshield: add comfort and speed up departure in winter conditions.
  • Power tailgate: makes accessing the cargo area easier, especially when carrying groceries or sports equipment.
  • Leather upholstery and power-adjustable driver's seat: are among the comfort features found in many better-equipped vehicles.
  • Rockford Fosgate audio system: is the audio system used in many higher-trim third-generation vehicles.
  • Sunroof: brings light into the cabin, though availability depends on trim level.
  • Remote heating and charge scheduling on the PHEV: make winter use of the plug-in hybrid more convenient, provided the vehicle's remote control or a compatible app is functional.

Buyer's Guide

What should you check when buying a used Mitsubishi Outlander?

The inspection should focus on the features specific to the chosen powertrain and trim level, as well as the condition of the individual vehicle:
  • Service history: check completed scheduled maintenance and any repairs, and find out what service work is coming up next.
  • PHEV system: verify that charging works both from a standard charging point and using the car's own cable. Check that the charging connectors, covers, and cables are undamaged.
  • Battery condition: request a battery health report if one is available. The range estimate shown on the instrument cluster alone is not a condition test.
  • Heating and air conditioning: test the cabin heating, air conditioning, and remote pre-heating if available. The PHEV's electric range does not tell you whether all heating components are functioning correctly.
  • Seating capacity and space: in a seven-seat vehicle, test the folding mechanisms of the third row. In a PHEV, check the cargo floor and the storage space designated for charging cables.
  • Body and chassis: inspect the underside, sills, wheel arches, paintwork, and even tire wear. During a test drive, the car should track straight without any unusual rattles or vibrations.
  • Recalls: open service and safety recalls can be checked using the license plate number or VIN through Mitsubishi's recall inquiry service.

PHEV battery and combustion engine model checks

In a PHEV, the available capacity of the drive battery gradually decreases over time due to age, use, and charging history. The most reliable starting point is a vehicle-specific battery report or a measurement taken during a service visit. The range estimate shown on the instrument cluster is also based on previous driving and conditions, so it alone does not indicate battery health.
In gasoline and diesel models, there is no drive battery, so the inspection focuses on documenting the engine, transmission, drivetrain, and service history. For diesel models, the vehicle's previous usage pattern is important, as repeated short trips are not ideal for a diesel engine's emissions systems. However, potential faults or repairs should not be assumed without vehicle-specific findings.

Maintenance and running costs

The running costs of the Mitsubishi Outlander are highly competitive for its class, and routine maintenance is often less expensive than that of European premium rivals. The PHEV plug-in hybrid in particular can have minimal running costs at their best when the vehicle is charged regularly.
The cost structure of the Outlander typically consists of the following:
  • Total costs when buying used: The baseline costs are those typical of a large all-wheel-drive SUV, such as insurance, vehicle tax, and larger tires. For a high-mileage example, a regular and documented service history and upcoming repair needs carry more weight in the total cost of ownership than the fuel consumption figure stated on paper.
  • The major impact of charging habits: When charged regularly, the Outlander PHEV handles short everyday trips on electricity alone. If the battery is not charged, the car operates as a conventional hybrid. In that case, the weight of the onboard battery pack increases fuel consumption, meaning long-distance highway consumption does not match the optimal figures quoted for shorter test runs.
  • Servicing and technology: Although the hybrid system introduces high-voltage technology, the electric motors recover braking energy during deceleration. This reduces wear on mechanical brake pads and discs, which helps lower maintenance costs.

Standard Outlander or Outlander PHEV?

The standard gasoline or diesel Outlander suits a buyer who does not want to or cannot charge the vehicle. Seven-seat options are also available in these versions. However, they do not form a single unified model, as the engine, transmission, drivetrain, and seating capacity vary.
The Outlander PHEV is best suited for someone who charges regularly and for whom five seats are sufficient. It is always all-wheel drive, but the older 2.0 PHEV and the 2.4 PHEV introduced for the 2019 model year differ in terms of the drive battery and powertrain. If you are considering a plug-in hybrid, also take a look at the separate Outlander PHEV inventory.

PHEV, gasoline, or diesel?

PHEV is the best fit when you can charge the vehicle regularly and most of your everyday trips fall within the available electric range. It always offers all-wheel drive, but the third-generation model has only five seats.
The gasoline model is a straightforward choice if you do not have access to a charging point and your annual mileage is moderate. Front-wheel and all-wheel drive options are available, as well as five- and seven-seat configurations, so the specific version should be confirmed from the listing.
Diesel may suit long-distance driving and towing if you cover a high number of miles. In short urban driving, a diesel generally does not perform at its best. When choosing a used diesel, service history and the vehicle's previous usage pattern are key factors.

Competitors and Comparison

The Outlander is worth comparing to both smaller SUVs from the same brand and to spacious five- and seven-seat competitors. The most suitable option depends above all on the number of seats, space requirements, powertrain, and charging capability. A distinctive feature of the Outlander is that among used cars, in addition to conventional gasoline and diesel models, there are plenty of four-wheel-drive PHEV plug-in hybrids available.

Mitsubishi's Own Alternatives

Within Mitsubishi's lineup, the closest alternatives to the Outlander are smaller models. They suit buyers who don't need as much passenger or cargo space.
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: A shorter and more compact SUV than the Outlander, also available in a PHEV version. It's a better fit if a smaller exterior size is sufficient and there's no need for seven seats.
  • Mitsubishi ASX: A noticeably smaller option suited for city use and lighter family driving. The ASX is a natural point of comparison if purchase price and easy maneuverability matter more than generous space.

Key Competitors

The Outlander's main competitors stand out for their family-friendly space, available all-wheel drive, and multiple powertrain options.
  • Toyota RAV4: Available with gasoline and diesel engines, and in newer model years as a self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The RAV4 Hybrid suits drivers who don't need to plug in, while the Outlander PHEV offers more affordable plug-in hybrid options among older model years.
  • Honda CR-V: A spacious five-seat option available in gasoline, diesel, and hybrid versions depending on the model year. The CR-V is worth including in your comparison if a third row of seats isn't needed and cabin roominess is a priority.
  • Nissan X-Trail: Also available as a seven-seater, making it a direct alternative to the combustion-engine Outlander. The X-Trail comes in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations as well as manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Kia Sorento: A larger alternative to the Outlander, with an emphasis on seven seats, towing capacity, and long-distance space. Newer Sorentos are also available in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.

Summary

The Outlander is a solid starting point for comparison when you're looking for a spacious SUV and want to choose between gasoline, diesel, or plug-in hybrid. The PHEV stands out with its electric all-wheel drive, while standard Outlanders are also available in seven-seat configurations. When choosing the right model, compare not only the powertrain but also the number of seats, drivetrain type, towing capacity, cargo space, service history, and the individual vehicle's features.

Mitsubishi Outlander – Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mitsubishi Outlander a good used car? Yes, it is. The Mitsubishi Outlander (especially the PHEV plug-in hybrid) is one of the most popular used SUVs in Finland. It offers excellent value for money if you're looking for a spacious family car, reliable all-wheel drive, and fuel efficiency for everyday use. However, the condition and service history of individual used vehicles can vary, so these should always be checked separately.
Does the Mitsubishi Outlander have seven seats? Some gasoline and diesel Outlanders are available with seven seats. The third-generation Outlander PHEV is always a five-seater, so the number of seats should be confirmed in the vehicle listing.
Is the Mitsubishi Outlander always a plug-in hybrid? No, it's not. The Outlander is available in gasoline, diesel, and PHEV versions. Only the Outlander with the PHEV designation is a plug-in hybrid that can be charged from an external power source.
Is it always all-wheel drive? No, it's not always all-wheel drive either. The gasoline and diesel versions are available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. The Outlander PHEV is all-wheel drive and uses an electric motor on both the front and rear axles.
Can you drive the Outlander PHEV without charging the battery? Yes, you can. In that case, the car uses the gasoline engine and the hybrid system, but the greatest economic benefit of a plug-in hybrid is not realized. Regular charging is best suited to the intended use of this model.
How do you check the battery health of an Outlander PHEV? The actual battery health is checked by reading the vehicle's SoH value (State of Health) from the onboard computer, which shows the battery's current maximum capacity as a percentage compared to when it was new. The estimated electric range shown on the dashboard alone does not indicate battery health, as the estimate is also based on previous driving patterns and conditions.
Does the Outlander PHEV have a 2.0- or 2.4-liter engine? Older third-generation PHEV models have a 2.0-liter gasoline engine. The updated version introduced for the 2019 model year features a 2.4-liter engine and a larger drive battery.
What is the towing capacity of the Mitsubishi Outlander? Many third-generation Outlander PHEV models have a braked towing capacity of 1,500 kilograms. The figure varies across other versions, so the vehicle's permitted towing capacity should be verified from the registration documents.
Does the Outlander PHEV have a timing belt or a timing chain? The third-generation 2.0- and 2.4-liter PHEV gasoline engines use a timing chain. This does not eliminate the need for scheduled maintenance, but the car does not have the regular replacement interval typically associated with a timing belt.
What does PHEV mean? PHEV stands for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The Outlander PHEV has a gasoline engine, a drive battery, and electric motors, and the battery can be charged from an external power source.
