Model Years and Generations
- Original G08 (introduced 2020): Production began in Shenyang, China, in late September 2020, and the first cars arrived in Finland in 2021. Rear-wheel drive, 80 kWh battery, 286 hp. In Finland, the initial trim levels were Charged and Charged Plus.
- LCI update (introduced 2021): The front and rear were redesigned, featuring a unified kidney grille and new taillights. The battery and power output remained the same. Updated vehicles in Finland are primarily from the 2022 model year onward.
- Production ended (2025): BMW removed the iX3 from its configurator in the fall of 2024, and first-generation production ended in the spring of 2025. Used G08 vehicles are still widely available.
- New iX3, Neue Klasse (from 2025): Introduced in September 2025 and manufactured in Debrecen, Hungary. It features an 800-volt system, a 108.7 kWh battery, and a WLTP range of up to 805 km (50 xDrive). It is an entirely new vehicle, not an update to the G08. The G08 iX3 sold in Finland comes with a single powertrain option: fully electric. There is no hybrid version, so the choice comes down to model year and trim level.
Fully Electric
A single electric motor drives the rear wheels, producing 210 kW (286 hp) and 400 Nm of torque. According to BMW, the motor is designed without rare earth metals. The 0–60 mph acceleration takes 6.8 seconds, and the top speed is 112 mph (180 km/h).
Battery, Range, and Charging
- Battery: 80 kWh gross, 74 kWh net (usable).
- Range: Approximately 460 km (286 miles) on the WLTP cycle. Range will be shorter during Finnish winters, so check whether the vehicle is equipped with a heat pump and battery preconditioning.
- Consumption: WLTP energy consumption is approximately 19 kWh/100 km. As an example: if home charging costs 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, driving 100 km costs roughly €1.90.
- DC Fast Charging: CCS connector, up to 150 kW. BMW states that charging from 10% to 80% takes as little as approximately 34 minutes under optimal conditions.
- Home Charging: 11 kW AC charging (Type 2). According to BMW, a full charge from empty takes approximately 7.5 hours.
Transmission and Drive Configuration
The iX3 features a single-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. No all-wheel drive xDrive version was produced for the G08 generation — an all-wheel drive iX3 will only be available in the upcoming Neue Klasse generation.
The towing capacity is 750 kg for both braked and unbraked trailers, with a tongue load of 75 kg and a roof load capacity of 100 kg. This is sufficient for a bike rack and a small trailer, but not for a large caravan or boat.

Driving Dynamics and Features
The iX3 weighs over two tons, but the battery is mounted in the floor, keeping the center of gravity low. Rear-wheel drive and instant torque make acceleration smooth, and premium drivers will also notice it in the cabin: quietness is part of the package.

Maintenance and Running Costs
An electric motor doesn't require engine oil, so maintenance is lighter than on the gasoline X3. Running costs are largely determined by your charging setup: a kilowatt-hour charged at home is significantly cheaper than at a public fast charger, and with a consumption of around 19 kWh/100 km, the difference adds up quickly.
It's worth calculating the battery warranty before making a purchase. The warranty expires at 8 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever comes first. For a high-mileage vehicle, the remaining warranty period may therefore be shorter than the original registration year might suggest.
What to Check When Buying a Used iX3?

- Domestic vs. imported vehicle: Standard equipment on imported vehicles may differ from domestically sold models. Check for features such as a heat pump, tow hitch, and winter equipment.
- Winter equipment: A heat pump and battery pre-conditioning affect range in cold weather. Test their functionality during a test drive.
- Charging: Confirm that the vehicle supports both AC charging (11 kW) and DC fast charging (CCS), and that charging cables are included in the sale.

The name iX3 now covers two generations, and the two vehicles are worlds apart. In Saka's used car inventory, the G08 has been the most common (as of the review date in October 2026).

The new iX3 is the right choice if you need a range of over 500 km, all-wheel drive, or towing capability. In Germany, the 50 xDrive was priced at €68,900 at launch. The G08 is the better fit if you want a fully electric BMW SUV at a significantly lower price and a 460 km range is sufficient for everyday use.
