Ford Transit

Large van for versatile transportation

Overview

Ford Transit in Brief

The Ford Transit is a large commercial vehicle whose strengths include versatile body configurations, various drivetrain options, and a cab designed for work. It is well suited for construction contractors, transport companies, and buyers who need more space than a mid-size van can offer.
In the used market, this model is most commonly found as a diesel. Available options include front-wheel, rear-wheel, and all-wheel drive vehicles, as well as manual and automatic transmissions. The lineup also includes the fully electric E-Transit. In addition to standard panel vans, the Transit is available in crew cab configurations, flatbeds, box bodies, and passenger transport versions. Flatbed models and enclosed box body versions — for example for moving services — are also available. Minibuses and dual-row seating models for transporting work crews round out the range.
The Transit is a different model from the smaller Transit Custom and Transit Connect. You can compare them among Saka's used Ford vehicles.

Who Is the Ford Transit For?

The Transit is suited for buyers who need plenty of cargo space and want to choose a vehicle that closely matches their work or hobbies.
  • Construction and installation work: the spacious cargo area makes it possible to combine tools, supplies, and shelving systems in a single vehicle.
  • Delivery and freight transport: choosing the right body length, doors, and loading solutions can make repeated loading operations easier.
  • Transporting a work crew: the crew cab version combines passenger seating with a separate cargo area.
  • Towing: the lineup includes options suited for various towing tasks. The right vehicle is selected based on permitted weights.
  • Travel and hobbies: the Transit is also a popular base for building a camper van and for transporting large recreational equipment. This model is very popular within the Vanlife culture. When planning a travel build, it is worth assessing the space needed for insulation, beds, and other fixtures already when choosing the vehicle.

Used Ford Transit Price

The price of a used Ford Transit is influenced in particular by the model year, mileage, body configuration, drivetrain, and service history. All-wheel drive, automatic transmission, an auxiliary heater, and ready-made work vehicle fittings can increase the price, but they may also reduce the additional purchases required for your own use.
At the time of review in September 2026, Saka's inventory included, for example, a 2012 diesel model at €10,900, a 2018 all-wheel drive diesel model at €23,900, and a 2023 front-wheel drive diesel model at €24,900. These prices are individual examples, and you can find up-to-date options in the vehicle listings on this page.

Model Years and Facelifts

Over the Transit's long model history, the same name covers a wide variety of vehicles. When searching for a used one, the key milestones in the model's history are in particular the following:
  • The 2006 refresh: the older inventory includes various diesel engines, body configurations, and drivetrain options. For these vehicles, condition and completed repairs carry significant weight in the selection process.
  • The all-new large Transit introduced in 2014: the body style was completely redesigned. Early European diesel models used a 2.2-liter TDCi engine.
  • From 2016 onward: the 2.0-liter EcoBlue joined the diesel lineup. It is worth identifying the engine version, as its timing system differs from the earlier 2.2-liter diesel.
  • The 2019 update: the front end, cab, and technology were refreshed. Mild hybrid diesel versions were also added to the lineup.
  • Electric models in the 2020s: the fully electric E-Transit expanded the options for regular transport and delivery use.

Technical Specifications

Engines and Powertrains

  • Older diesels: used examples include 2.2- and 2.4-liter TDCi versions. The engine range varies depending on the model year and drivetrain.
  • 2.0 EcoBlue: a diesel engine family used from 2016 onward, available in several power outputs. Both manual and automatic transmission options are available.
  • Diesel mild hybrid: the mHEV version's electrical system assists the diesel engine. The vehicle is not plug-in charged and cannot be driven on electricity alone.
  • E-Transit: a fully electric option. When comparing used models, check the battery version, charging capabilities, and whether the range is sufficient for your driving needs, including in winter.
Transit automatic transmissions vary by model year and drivetrain. Newer models feature, for example, an eight-speed automatic for front-wheel-drive versions and a ten-speed automatic for rear-wheel-drive diesel versions.

Drivetrains

The Ford Transit is available in front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, and all-wheel-drive diesel versions, so the drivetrain should always be verified in the listing for the specific vehicle. The fully electric E-Transit is rear-wheel drive.
The lower cargo floor of a front-wheel-drive panel van makes loading easier. Rear-wheel drive is an option for heavier transport use, and all-wheel drive can be beneficial on snowy job sites or slippery driveways. However, the permitted payload and towing capacity are determined by the vehicle's technical specifications.

Dimensions, Cargo Space, and Towing Capacity

L2, L3, and L4 refer to different body lengths. H2 denotes a medium-roof version and H3 a high-roof version. The drivetrain also affects cargo area height, so the L and H designations alone do not convey all dimensions.
Below are examples of panel van body styles from the model generation introduced in 2014, based on Ford's model brochure.

The L4H3 column data applies to the single rear-wheel version. Dimensions for the dual rear-wheel model may differ.
The volumes are maximum figures as stated by the manufacturer. Figures measured using the VDA method are lower. The table does not apply to all model years, drivetrains, or special body configurations, and dual rear wheels, for example, affect cargo area dimensions. More detailed version specifications can be found in the model brochure.
Payload and towing capacity must always be verified from the individual vehicle's specifications. The Transit lineup covers a range of gross vehicle weights, and the size of the cargo area alone does not indicate the permitted load. Shelving, lifts, and camper conversions reduce the payload available for cargo.
The vehicle's exterior height should be checked separately if you drive into parking garages or low-clearance loading areas. Roof racks and other roof-mounted accessories must be factored into the total height.

Driving Experience and Top Features

Driving Feel, Driver Assistance, and Safety

The high seating position in the Transit helps with visibility in traffic. In day-to-day use of a large vehicle, seat adjustability, mirror visibility, and parking assistance features become especially important. During a test drive, it is worth trying tight turns and reversing in an environment similar to your intended use.
Newer examples may be equipped with driver assistance features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system. Availability depends on the model year and trim level.

Top Features

When comparing used Transits, the following features are especially worth looking at:
  • fuel-operated auxiliary heater
  • heated windshield and seats
  • driver's seat adjustments, lumbar support, and armrest
  • automatic transmission
  • reversing camera and parking sensors
  • cruise control or adaptive cruise control
  • smartphone integration with the multimedia system
  • cargo area lighting, plywood lining, and shelving
  • number of side doors and rear door opening angle
  • trailer hitch and loading solutions suited to the job at hand.
The Trend, Limited, and Trail trim names help give a general sense of the equipment level, but the features of an individual vehicle should always be verified from the listing. For a work vehicle, functional heating and a cargo area suited to your work may matter more than the trim level.

Buyer's Guide

What to Check When Buying a Used Ford Transit?

The Transit's previous use affects what you should focus on during inspection. A delivery van, a worksite vehicle, and a camper conversion can be in very different condition even at the same age.
  • Service history: check the dates of services, mileage readings, and repairs carried out. Also find out what major maintenance needs are coming up next.
  • Engine and timing: check the engine version and service history. For EcoBlue models in particular, confirm when the timing belt was last replaced or when the next replacement is due.
  • Transmission and drivetrain: test the gear changes when cold and when warm. Also listen for any unusual drivetrain noises.
  • Body and chassis: check for rust, sills, lower door edges, cargo floor condition, and any previous repairs.
  • Cargo area equipment: assess the condition and mounting of shelving, load securing points, and any lift gate.
  • Engine operation: observe cold starts, idle behavior, and warning lights. Find out about any emissions system repairs.
  • Heating and electrical equipment: test the auxiliary heater, air conditioning, locks, camera, and multimedia system.
  • E-Transit: check charging functionality, cables, and any available data on the battery's condition.
  • Registration details: verify the vehicle class, seating capacity, and documentation of any modifications.

Maintenance and Running Costs

A well-maintained Ford Transit's upkeep costs are generally reasonable compared to similarly sized models from other brands. The Transit's running costs are particularly influenced by the engine, body version, load, and driving style. A large, high-roof body increases aerodynamic drag, and urban delivery driving puts different demands on the vehicle than steady highway driving.
In addition to fuel or electricity, costs arise from servicing, tires, brakes, and insurance. Four-wheel drive and special equipment bring their own maintenance requirements. In commercial use, the cost of a replacement vehicle during servicing and lost working time also factor into the total cost of ownership. Alongside the purchase price, it's worth comparing how much maintenance or equipment work needs to be done immediately after acquisition.

Diesel or Electric?

The choice of powertrain should be based on your typical working day:
  • Choose diesel if you drive long or varied routes and charging options are limited.
  • Choose E-Transit if your routes are predictable and regular charging is feasible.

Front-Wheel Drive, Rear-Wheel Drive, or Four-Wheel Drive?

The importance of the drive configuration depends on where you drive and how the vehicle is loaded. In addition to the drive type, tires, load placement, and the vehicle's technical specifications all affect performance.
  • Choose front-wheel drive if you value a low loading floor and the vehicle will be used for regular road driving.
  • Consider rear-wheel drive if you're looking for a version suited to heavier loads or a specialist body.
  • Choose four-wheel drive if you regularly drive on slippery worksites, snowy yards, or poorly maintained roads.

Manual or Automatic?

  • Choose automatic if ease of daily driving is a priority. An automatic makes driving easier in traffic and in delivery work with frequent stops.
  • Choose manual if you find the right vehicle with a good service history and gear shifting suits your driving style. A manual can be a great fit for highway-focused use and may offer more options in a lower price range.

Competitors and Comparison

Comparison Between Ford Models

  • Ford Transit Custom: a mid-size option for when you don't need the cargo space of the full-size Transit. Well suited for installation and maintenance work, for example.
  • Ford Transit Connect: a smaller van for city driving, service calls, and lighter transport needs.
The full-size Transit is the most natural choice among these when the cargo, work vehicle equipment, or special body requires more space.

Comparison With Competitors

  • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: an alternative in the large commercial vehicle class, with a wide range of transport and specialty body versions available.
  • Volkswagen Crafter: a point of comparison for buyers looking for a large panel van or work vehicle, for example.
  • Fiat Ducato: an option for cargo transport and recreational use.

Summary

Transit's strength in comparison is the ability to choose from a variety of body styles and drivetrain configurations. When comparing it to the Sprinter and Crafter, it's worth paying particular attention to loading access, cab ergonomics, and available work vehicle equipment. If you're looking for a vehicle for recreational use, the Ducato's options are also worth exploring.
The best fit can be found by comparing individual vehicles of the same size class and intended use. Service history, condition, and the amount of modifications needed may matter more than the brand. Browse the options on Saka's used vehicles page.

Ford Transit – Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ford Transit a good used vehicle? Yes, the Ford Transit is a good option as a used work vehicle when you need a large cargo space and a body style suited to your work. Its strengths are versatility and practicality. When evaluating the condition of a used unit, the most important factors are service history, overall condition, and previous use.
What is the difference between the Ford Transit and the Transit Custom? The Transit is a larger commercial vehicle that also comes in high-roof and long-body versions as well as various specialist body configurations. The Transit Custom is a mid-size van.
Does the Ford Transit have a timing belt or a timing chain? Both exist. For example, the 2.2-liter TDCi diesel has a timing chain, while the 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel has an oil-bathed timing belt. The configuration can be determined based on the engine variant.
When does the timing belt on the Ford Transit need to be replaced? The updated replacement interval for the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel is 160,000 kilometers or six years, whichever comes first. Verify the current service schedule for your specific vehicle using its VIN. This interval does not apply to the timing chain-equipped 2.2 TDCi engine.
Is the Ford Transit front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive? The Transit is available in front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive diesel versions, so the drivetrain should be checked in the listing for each individual vehicle. The fully electric E-Transit is rear-wheel drive.
Can the Ford Transit be driven with a standard driver's license? Yes, if the vehicle's registered gross vehicle weight is no more than 3,500 kilograms and it has no more than eight passenger seats in addition to the driver. The lineup also includes heavier vehicles and bus versions, so the required license category should be verified in the vehicle's registration details.
What does Ford Transit 350 mean? The 350 typically refers to the 3,500-kilogram gross vehicle weight class. It does not indicate the vehicle's payload capacity. The exact permitted gross vehicle weight and available payload can be found in the vehicle's specifications.
Is the Ford Transit suitable as a camper van? Yes, and it is indeed very popular for this purpose. The high-roof, long-body version in particular offers plenty of possibilities for fitting beds, storage spaces, and other camping equipment.
Is the Ford Transit available with an automatic transmission? Yes. Used automatic diesel models are available, as well as the electric E-Transit.
