Kia Sportage

Popular SUV with great space and style

Overview

Kia Sportage in Brief

The Kia Sportage is a five-seat SUV that sits in Kia's lineup above the Niro and below the Sorento. The first generation had a body-on-frame, truck-like construction, but since 2004 the Sportage has evolved into a car-based family vehicle. In the Finnish used car market, the third, fourth, and fifth generations are the most commonly available.
Depending on the model year, the Sportage is offered with gasoline and diesel engines, front-wheel and all-wheel drive, and manual and automatic transmissions. The fifth generation expanded the lineup to include mild hybrid, full hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. The model's strengths include a commanding driving position, family-friendly interior space, and a broader range of variants than a typical passenger car. Check out other used Kia vehicles here.

Who Is the Kia Sportage For?

The Sportage is a great fit for buyers who want a reasonably sized SUV but need plenty of room for passengers, child seats, and luggage. It works well as an all-purpose family car in the city and on the highway, and the higher seating position makes getting in and out easier while also improving visibility in traffic.
  • For everyday family use: a front-wheel-drive gasoline model or a full hybrid offers a straightforward package without the need for external charging.
  • For long highway drives: a diesel may suit drivers who log a lot of miles on the road, provided the mileage is sufficient and the service history is in order.
  • For frequent short trips: a plug-in hybrid is worth considering if the car can be charged regularly at home or at work.
  • For slippery or poorly plowed roads: all-wheel drive helps with getting moving and maintaining traction (though safe winter driving still requires good tires).

Price of a Used Kia Sportage

In Saka's inventory at the time of review in September 2026, the Sportage price range extended from, for example, a 2012 diesel all-wheel-drive model at €5,790 to a 2022 plug-in hybrid all-wheel-drive model at €29,990. The same page featured third- and fourth-generation vehicles starting at around €8,000, as well as fifth-generation plug-in hybrids starting at approximately €27,000.
These are individual vehicles listed for sale, not average market prices for used cars as a whole. Price is influenced in particular by generation, powertrain, drivetrain, transmission, mileage, trim level, and service history. Check the current prices of Kia Sportage vehicles for sale directly in the listings on this page.

Model Years and Generations

Sportage generations differ significantly from one another. The first registration year may fall right at a model changeover, so it's worth identifying the generation by body style and model code as well.
  • First generation, 1993 through 2003 inclusive: a body-on-frame model that is noticeably more truck-like than later Sportages. It is already rare in the Finnish used car market.
  • Second generation, 2004 through 2010 inclusive: switched to a unibody construction and a more car-like architecture. Available with gasoline and diesel engines as well as front-wheel and all-wheel drive.
  • Third generation, 2010 through 2015 inclusive, model code SL: styling and driving dynamics shifted noticeably toward what the model is like today. Common in Finland are the 1.6- and 2.0-liter gasoline versions as well as the 1.7 and 2.0 CRDi diesels.
  • Fourth generation, 2016 through 2021 inclusive, model code QL: grew roomier than its predecessor. The lineup includes the 1.6 GDI, 1.6 T-GDI, and the 1.7 and 2.0 CRDi, among others. With the 2018 mid-cycle refresh, the 1.6 CRDi replaced the previous 1.7 CRDi diesel.
  • Fifth generation, from 2022, model code NQ5: a shorter body version was developed specifically for Europe. The most relevant options in Finland are the full hybrid and plug-in hybrid, both based on the 1.6 T-GDI gasoline engine. Early inventory also included mild hybrid and diesel versions.

Technical Specifications

Engines and Powertrains

The technology in used Sportage models varies significantly by generation. Engine displacement alone doesn't always identify a specific version, so it's worth reading the listing carefully for power output, transmission, drivetrain, and model year.
  • Third generation: The 1.6 GDI is a naturally aspirated gasoline engine, while the 2.0 GDI offers a larger engine and is also available with all-wheel drive. In the diesel lineup, the 1.7 CRDi is typically paired with front-wheel drive, while the 2.0 CRDi is commonly found with all-wheel drive.
  • Fourth generation: The 1.6 GDI is the more straightforward gasoline option, while the 1.6 T-GDI is turbocharged and noticeably more powerful. On the diesel side, the 1.7 and 2.0 CRDi were available initially, with the 1.6 CRDi added later.
  • Fifth generation: The 1.6 T-GDI serves as the foundation for gasoline, mild hybrid, full hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. Not all powertrains or drivetrain configurations have been available in Finland at the same time.
In the mild hybrid, a 48-volt electrical system assists the combustion engine, but the vehicle cannot travel any meaningful distance on electricity alone. The full hybrid can run briefly on electric power depending on conditions and recharges the drive battery while driving. The plug-in hybrid has a larger drive battery that is charged from an external power source.

Transmissions and Drivetrains

The Sportage is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. All-wheel drive is common in the third- and fourth-generation 2.0 CRDi diesels, and the fourth-generation 1.6 T-GDI gasoline engine is also available with all-wheel drive. The fifth-generation full hybrid comes in both front- and all-wheel drive, while the first plug-in hybrids sold in Finland are all-wheel drive.
The transmission may be a six-speed manual, a torque converter automatic, or a seven-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic. The DCT appears in, for example, the fourth-generation 1.6 T-GDI and 1.6 CRDi versions. It shifts quickly, but the feel during takeoff can differ from a traditional automatic. The fifth-generation full hybrid and plug-in hybrid use a six-speed automatic.

Differences Between Fifth-Generation Hybrids

The full hybrid and plug-in hybrid look similar from the outside, but they suit different types of use.

The cargo volumes apply to the fifth-generation European body style and are based on VDA measurement. The plug-in hybrid's battery pack reduces cargo space slightly compared to the full hybrid. Early model year plug-in hybrids on sale in Germany in September 2026 were advertised with a 70-kilometer electric range, but actual range varies depending on temperature, speed, heating use, and load.

Dimensions, Cargo Space, and Towing Capacity

The fifth-generation European Sportage is 4,515 millimeters long, 1,865 millimeters wide excluding side mirrors, and has a wheelbase of 2,680 millimeters. Its exterior dimensions still make it easy to use as a family car, but the longer wheelbase and more efficient use of space provide generous legroom for rear passengers.
Cargo space depends on the powertrain. In fifth-generation European versions, the manufacturer's stated VDA volume ranges from approximately 526 to 587 liters. Cargo space is largest in the standard gasoline version and smaller in models with hybrid technology.
The maximum permitted mass for a braked trailer varies depending on the engine, transmission, drivetrain, and model year. If you plan to tow a boat or camper trailer, check the vehicle's registration documents for the braked trailer mass including load, and also take into account the vehicle's permitted combination mass.

Driving Experience and Top Features

The third-generation Sportage feels simpler and noisier compared to newer models, but its controls are straightforward. The fourth generation brought improvements in ride comfort, the cabin, and driver assistance systems. The fifth generation emphasizes quieter travel, a wide display setup, and smooth automatic transmission driving in hybrid versions.

Top Features

When looking at a used Sportage, it's especially worth comparing the following features:
  • Heated steering wheel and heated front and rear seats
  • Fuel-powered auxiliary heater or other pre-heating solution suited to the vehicle's powertrain
  • LED headlights and automatic high beams
  • Adaptive cruise control and highway driving assist
  • Rear-view camera or 360-degree camera system
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Power-adjustable and ventilated front seats
  • Harman Kardon audio system
  • Panoramic sunroof
The LX, EX, Business Premium, and GT-Line trim names help give a sense of the equipment level, but the content varies by model year and powertrain. For example, GT-Line denotes a more distinctive exterior and interior appearance along with comprehensive equipment, but it does not represent a separate engine variant.

Buyer's Guide

What should you check when buying a used Kia Sportage?

When buying a used Sportage, pay particular attention to the following:
  • Service history: check the dates and mileage of scheduled maintenance, repairs that have been carried out, and any upcoming service needs. Kia's recommended service intervals vary by engine.
  • Warranty: find out the vehicle's original registration date, mileage, and how the service history may affect any remaining manufacturer's warranty. A long warranty period doesn't mean every used Kia still has an active warranty.
  • Transmission: test drive the car both cold and warmed up. A manual clutch should engage consistently, and a traditional automatic should shift smoothly.
  • All-wheel drive: confirm the drivetrain type in the listing and check that no AWD system warning lights are showing on the dashboard.
  • Tires: check the condition and even wear of the tires, and make sure all four tires are the same size.
  • Body and suspension: inspect the sills, lower door edges, wheel arches, visible underbody components, and any previous repairs. During the test drive, the car should track straight, and there should be no rattling from the suspension on uneven roads.
  • Plug-in hybrid: test charging with the cable included with the car and check any available information on the battery's condition. Also verify that the charging port, timers, and cabin pre-conditioning all work properly.
  • Electrical and comfort features: test the air conditioning, cameras, parking sensors, seat and steering wheel heaters, power tailgate, and panoramic sunroof if the car is equipped with them.
  • Recalls: confirm that any manufacturer campaigns and recalls applicable to the vehicle have been completed.

Maintenance and running costs

The Sportage's running costs are moderate relative to others in its class. Costs are influenced not only by the engine but also by the drivetrain, transmission, tire size, and how the car is used. An all-wheel-drive model is heavier than a front-wheel-drive one, and larger-rim tires typically cost more. For an older, high-mileage vehicle, it's worth evaluating upcoming brake, tire, suspension, and service needs alongside the purchase price.
According to Kia's service interval schedule, the fourth-generation 1.6 T-GDI requires a scheduled service every two years or 30,000 kilometers, and an oil change or annual service every year or 15,000 kilometers. The fifth-generation 1.6 T-GDI follows the same schedule. This is not a universal service interval for all Sportage engines, so the correct schedule should be verified based on the specific engine and model year.

Gasoline, diesel, full hybrid, or plug-in hybrid?

  • Choose gasoline if you drive a moderate amount, your routes vary, and you don't have access to charging. The naturally aspirated 1.6 GDI prioritizes simplicity, though its performance is more modest than the turbocharged 1.6 T-GDI.
  • Choose diesel if you frequently drive long distances and the engine has a chance to reach operating temperature regularly. Short urban trips are generally not where a diesel performs best.
  • Choose a full hybrid if you want an automatic transmission and a fuel-efficient option in urban driving without needing a charging cable. It's also a good fit for drivers who don't have access to charging at their parking spot.
  • Choose a plug-in hybrid if your daily driving often falls within the electric range and you charge the car regularly.

Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive?

Front-wheel drive is a sensible choice for everyday road driving if you don't have a recurring need for all-wheel drive. It's generally lighter and gives you more options to compare within the same budget. Good winter tires have a greater impact on safety than the number of driven wheels.
All-wheel drive is a good fit for drivers who frequently set off from a snowy driveway, drive on unplowed cottage roads, or tow a trailer in slippery conditions. That said, towing capacity should always be verified in the specific vehicle's registration documents.

Manual or automatic?

A manual transmission is common, especially in older front-wheel-drive gasoline and diesel models. It can be a good choice if you're looking for a more affordable purchase price and are comfortable with manual shifting.
An automatic makes city and stop-and-go driving easier, but it's important to identify the type of automatic. Third-generation and some fourth-generation models use a traditional torque converter automatic, while many fourth-generation turbo and diesel versions feature a DCT. The sixth-speed automatic in the fifth-generation full hybrid and plug-in hybrid is yet another different design.

Competitors and Comparison

Comparison Between Kia Models

  • Kia Niro is a good fit if you value a smaller exterior size and specifically want a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric vehicle. The Sportage generally offers more spacious interiors and more all-wheel-drive options.
  • Kia Sorento is worth considering if you need more passenger and cargo space, seven seats, or a towing capacity suited to a larger vehicle.
  • Kia XCeed is a lower and more compact alternative if you don't need the Sportage's interior space or ride height.
The Sportage sits in Kia's lineup as a well-rounded five-seat family car. It's more spacious than the Niro, yet easier to handle in the city than the Sorento and typically less expensive to purchase.

Comparison With Competitors

  • Hyundai Tucson is the Sportage's closest sibling model. Even within the same model year, there can still be differences in engines, features, warranty, and price.
  • Toyota RAV4 is worth comparing especially when you're looking for a full hybrid or plug-in hybrid and prefer a slightly larger body size.
  • Nissan Qashqai is a good comparison if you want a slightly more compact crossover and don't need the Sportage's largest cargo capacity or all-wheel-drive options.
  • Volkswagen Tiguan offers a similar size class, but its engine, transmission, and plug-in hybrid lineup differs from the Sportage.
  • Ford Kuga is a natural alternative, especially for those looking for a plug-in hybrid.

Summary

When choosing a Kia Sportage, the generation and intended use are the most decisive factors. The third generation offers affordable gasoline and diesel options, the fourth adds more space, safety features, and turbocharged engines, and the fifth introduces full and plug-in hybrids. Start by choosing the powertrain that fits your driving profile, then decide on drivetrain and transmission. When comparing individual vehicles, service history, features, and near-term costs matter more than the model year alone.
